We’re growing increasingly suspicious here at the luxury 24hrtraveller office. The Colonel has now filed two trip reports in consecutive days. Either he is off the drink or he owes some money to some unsavoury Dutch characters. It is probably the latter, hopefully we will not receive a package containing his severed thumb and a ransom note. He’s back! The Colonel, presumed missing in action, has unexpectedly filed a trip report from the resort of Zandvoort aan Zee. The town’s close proximity to Amsterdam troubles us, what has he has been up to all this time? What doesn’t concern us is his style of writing – he’s either back to his best or has plagiarised the whole lot. Either way, enjoy.

The Colonel is a friendly, helpful fellow. He always does his utmost to guide the budget traveller through various quirks and oddities of unfamiliar cities. Here’s his latest offering: “Trams are slightly ahead of the bus in terms of ease for exploring the inner-city. The user-unfriendly Strippen-Kaart appears to be the best ticket to buy to get around. It uses a system of zones on a ticket that has to be self-punched on boarding the desired mode of transport. It sounds confusing because it is. Asking for help would be the best advice.”

The Colonel has returned relatively unscathed from his Dutch adventure. Unusually focused, he has produced a beautiful report from his visit to the town of Alkmaar.

“Waterways, less neglected than their out of city cousins, present a relaxed, agreeable environment. Natural inquisitiveness will lead the traveller to one of the many narrow alleyways that open up to reveal small independent shops, cafes, and bars...”

Daytime on the ship passes slowly and in between eating most passengers seem to sit themselves at a bar and begin working their way through the elaborately named cocktails that appear on a surprisingly thick bar menu.

Those that choose not to drink turn their attention to food and multiple clusters of salivating passengers appear, engaging in deep discussion over the merits of this evening’s menus.

Being a traveller that is more accustomed to dreary hostels, poor food, and interaction with late night railway station eccentrics, the opportunity to cruise the Bay of Biscay on a luxury liner is an opportunity too good to miss.

Carefully folding a dinner-suit into a freshly purchased suitcase ready for the first evening on board a luxury liner certainly beats throwing an old pair of jeans into a bin liner, dirty from an evening travelling the night train from Vienna to Venice.

The atmosphere on the coach was surprisingly jovial considering the time of the morning. Fatigue had been postponed by anticipation of another remarkable day exploring the hostile landscape of south-western Tunisia.

Fellow passengers appeared surprisingly refreshed, and as the coach made its way out of the desert oasis town of Douz the sleep induced silence of the previous morning had been replaced by excited chatter. Read more here…
